Support and controls
Limits, self-exclusion and where to get help in Canada
This page is about controls rather than warnings. Every operator in this register provides limit tools; they are simply not advertised. Here is what each one does, and who to contact if the tools are no longer enough.
If you need to talk to someone now
Call ConnexOntario on 1-866-531-2600. Free, confidential, 24 hours. connexontario.ca
Outside Ontario, every province funds an equivalent service; the CAMH Gambling, Gaming & Technology Use programme maintains a directory. None of these services are operated by gambling companies.
The four controls that work
1. A deposit limit
The strongest tool, because it works while you are not thinking about it. Set a daily, weekly or monthly ceiling in the cashier and the account will refuse deposits beyond it. Increases typically take effect only after a cooling-off period of 24 hours or more, while decreases apply immediately. That asymmetry is deliberate, and it is on your side.
2. A loss limit
Where offered, this caps net losses over a period rather than money deposited. It catches the case a deposit limit misses: recycling winnings back through the account without depositing again. Fewer operators offer it, and it is worth asking support whether it exists.
3. A session or time limit
A reminder or a forced logout after a set period. Weaker than a money limit, but it addresses the thing money limits do not. Time spent is the reliable predictor of harm. Reality checks that interrupt play are more effective than ones that appear in a corner.
4. Self-exclusion
A block for a fixed term, commonly six months, a year or five years, that cannot normally be lifted early. Ask for self-exclusion by name. Requesting "account closure" instead gets you something that can frequently be reversed the same day. That is not the same protection, and it is a distinction operators rarely volunteer.
Why the maths never turns
Every game in every casino in this register carries a built-in margin, and it applies to every round independently. That is why no sequence of results makes the next one more favourable. It is also why longer play converges towards the expected loss rather than away from it. A bonus makes a session longer, so on average it costs more, not less. That is the single most counter-intuitive fact in the whole subject. It is also why our bonuses page prices offers rather than promoting them.
Signals worth taking seriously
Playing for longer than intended. Depositing again after deciding to stop. Chasing a loss with a larger stake. Borrowing, or using money committed to something else. Concealing how much or how often from people close to you. Feeling relief rather than enjoyment when a session starts. None of these is about the amount of money involved. Any one of them is reason enough to call one of the services above.
What this site does and does not do
CasinoAlma records operator terms and prices bonus offers. It does not accept wagers and is not a gambling operator, and no operator pays for its place in the register. It cannot set a limit on your behalf, and it is not a substitute for the support services listed above.
Common questions
What is the fastest way to limit what I can lose?
A deposit limit set in the cashier, before you fund the account. It is the only control that works without any effort on the day. It caps the money entering the account, rather than relying on you to stop. Every operator in this register offers one; most bury it two levels into account settings.
Can I stop myself playing entirely?
Yes. Self-exclusion blocks your account for a fixed period and cannot usually be reversed before it expires, which is the point of it. Ask support for self-exclusion rather than account closure — closure can often be undone in minutes, exclusion cannot.
Does a losing streak mean a win is due?
No, and this is the most expensive false belief in gambling. Each spin, hand and draw is independent of the last. A run of losses changes nothing about the next outcome, and no staking system alters the house edge. The maths is on the house-edge scale on our bonuses page.
How do I know if my playing has become a problem?
The recognised signals are behavioural rather than financial. They include playing longer than intended, chasing losses and borrowing to play. Others are hiding it from people close to you, and relief rather than enjoyment when playing. Any of those is worth a conversation with one of the services below.
Are the support services free?
Yes. ConnexOntario and the provincial helplines listed below are free, confidential and available at any hour. They are not gambling companies and they do not report to them.
