Casino guides: the house edge, the terms and how payouts really work
Short, specific explanations of the things that change outcomes, not strategy tips. Each one links to the page where the underlying numbers live.
Where the house edge sits, game by game
Every game carries a built-in margin, it applies to each round independently, and the rule set matters as much as the game. Single-zero roulette costs roughly half what double-zero costs, and it is the same game. The table below runs from blackjack at 0.50% to keno at 25%, a fiftyfold spread that no staking pattern touches.
| Game | Rules assumed | House edge | Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blackjack | Basic strategy, 3:2 blackjack payout | 0.50% | 99.50% |
| Baccarat | Banker bet | 1.06% | 98.94% |
| Craps | Pass line | 1.41% | 98.59% |
| Roulette | Single zero (European) | 2.70% | 97.30% |
| Video slots | Mainstream titles | 4.00% | 96.00% |
| Roulette | Double zero (American) | 5.26% | 94.74% |
| Keno | House draw | 25.00% | 75.00% |
Swipe the table sideways to see every column
The simulators let you watch this happen: set a return, run a thousand spins, and see the curve drift by roughly the edge. The practical use of this table is not picking a game. It is converting turnover into an expected cost.
Staking C$10,000 on mainstream slots at a 4% edge has an expected loss near C$400, whatever happens on any individual spin. Blackjack at 0.50% would put the same turnover at about C$50. That is the arithmetic the wagering calculator applies to bonus conditions.
Why withdrawals are slower than deposits
Money moving towards an operator needs no checking. Money moving away triggers identity verification, anti-money-laundering review and often a manual approval step. That asymmetry is regulatory rather than technical, which is why no payment method escapes it entirely. Even so, 2 of the 6 operators in the register still state a window inside 24 hours.
It also explains the most common complaint about online casinos. A payout that appears stuck is usually waiting on verification rather than being withheld. The fix, completing verification before you need it, is available on day one. How the check itself decides the timing is set out in this guide to KYC and withdrawal speed.
The terms that decide an offer's real value
In order of how often they cost people money:
- The maximum bet while a bonus is active. Breach it and the bonus is void.
- The game weighting, which decides how much of a table stake counts at all.
- The time limit, which caps the turnover that is achievable.
- The winnings cap, often the real value of a no-deposit offer.
All four are explained in full on the bonuses page.
Choosing a payment method
Of the 15 methods documented here, two differences matter. The first is whether money can come back the same route. The second is what daily ceiling your own bank imposes. Five are deposit-only, which means nominating a second verified method before you need it. Canadian e-Transfer limits of roughly C$2,000–C$3,000 a day cap withdrawals, regardless of what an operator permits. The payment methods comparison records which is which.
What no guide can give you
An advantage. The edge in the table above is not a difficulty setting to be played around. It is the arithmetic of the games themselves. It holds for every session, regardless of skill, staking pattern or recent results. Understanding it is useful because it makes the cost of a session predictable, not because it makes the cost smaller. If the cost is the part that has become a problem, the limits and support page is more useful than any guide here.
Common questions
What is the single most useful thing to do before depositing?
Complete identity verification at signup rather than at your first withdrawal. Verification is what a payout actually waits on, so doing it early does more for withdrawal speed than any choice of payment method. Setting a deposit limit at the same time takes another minute and is the only control that works without effort later.
Does the same game pay back the same at every casino?
Not always. Operators can sometimes select between several return settings for an identical title. The theoretical return can therefore differ between two casinos showing the same game. The figure is normally in the game's own information panel, and it is worth checking before a long session.
Which games give the house the smallest edge?
Blackjack played to basic strategy, at around 0.5%, then baccarat on the banker bet and craps on the pass line. Single-zero roulette at 2.70% is nearly twice as good as double-zero at 5.26%, the same game, a different wheel. Keno at around 25% is the most expensive common game in any lobby.
Do betting systems work?
No. Doubling after a loss, or any other staking pattern, changes the distribution of outcomes but not the expected result. Each round is independent, and the edge applies to every one. What such systems reliably do is increase stake size during losing runs, which brings a table limit or an empty balance closer.
Is a bigger welcome bonus a better deal?
Not on its own, the offer size says nothing about the turnover condition attached. Price it before accepting. The calculator on the bonuses page turns any offer into the staking it demands. That is usually a much larger number than the bonus itself.
